The central government wants to increase the number of cinemas in the country and due to this, the government will provide financial help to those who open single-screen cinemas in small cities. According to the Economic Survey, in 2018, a total of 9601 cinema screens were being operated across the country.

The scheme is intended to provide financial assistance to single screen cinematographers in Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities, according to the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, audio-visual services of the Champion Services Sectors Scheme, with an aim to increase the number of cinema theaters in the country. Incentive Scheme for State Governments / Union Territories launched to increase the number of cinemas under the sub-scheme named Agee.

The ministry has said that to increase the number of cinema lovers in the country, the GST rates on tickets have been cut significantly. The ministry says that according to the Gross State Domestic Product data, before the implementation of GST, cinema tickets used to have an entertainment tax of up to 30 percent.

The objective of this scheme will be to provide financial assistance to those opening single screen cinema theaters in Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities. The Ministry says that the financial assistance will be very helpful in setting up cinema theaters for the applicants.

GST reduced on tickets

The ministry has said that to increase the number of cinema lovers in the country, the GST rates on tickets have been cut significantly. The ministry says that according to the Gross State Domestic Product data, cinema tickets were subject to entertainment tax of up to 30 percent before GST was implemented.

This has been reduced significantly after the implementation of GST. Currently, GST is levied on cinema tickets in two ways. GST is levied at 12 percent on tickets priced at Rs 100 or less and 18 percent for tickets priced above Rs 100.
